The number everyone has been estimating since 2023 is now on the record. In the same November 3 Newswire post that moved pre-load to November 10, Rockstar confirmed that the GTA 6 install size is up to 212GB. It is a single figure given for both consoles rather than a per-platform split, and it closes what had been the longest running open specification of the entire pre-launch campaign.

What the 212GB Figure Covers

Rockstar's phrasing is "up to," which matters. Read it as a ceiling to plan against rather than a precise byte count, for three reasons:

How Close the Reported Figures Were

This is a rare case where the leak economy came out looking decent. On October 27 the database-watching account PlayStation Game Size posted a 210GB listing, which Insider Gaming said it corroborated, and we covered the sourcing in detail in our 210GB report. The official number landed two gigabytes above it, which is well inside the margin you would expect between a store backend field and a final published figure.

The aggregator claim of 228GB that circulated alongside it was fabricated, and remains so. The much older community estimates of 120GB to 180GB, which our download size explainer was built on before any hard data existed, were simply too low. Nobody guessed the ceiling correctly, and the lesson is the usual one: database readings are decent evidence and aggregator round numbers are not evidence at all.

Where 212GB Sits Historically

For scale, against the games people actually have installed:

GameApproximate install
GTA 5 (current gen)95GB
Red Dead Redemption 2150GB
Call of Duty, modern entries150GB to 230GB depending on packs
GTA 6Up to 212GB

So GTA 6 is not an outlier in absolute terms. Annual shooters with multiple campaign and multiplayer packs have been in this territory for years. What is unusual is that 212GB is a single player game with no announced online component, which is the comparison that actually tells you something about the density Rockstar is shipping. The confirmed feature set is all density figures rather than area figures: 700+ enterable interiors, 200+ vehicles with fully interactive interiors, 600,000+ animations, 170+ animal species, ray traced global illumination and strand based hair. Uncompressed audio for an enormous radio lineup and a 34 track original album sits on top of that.

Put bluntly, 212GB is what it costs to make a world where almost every door opens.

What It Means for Your Console Tonight

A base PS5 ships with roughly 667GB usable, a PS5 Pro with about 1.86TB, an Xbox Series X with roughly 802GB, and a Series S with about 364GB. On the Series S, 212GB is well over half the drive, which for most owners means choosing between GTA 6 and effectively everything else currently installed.

The platform rules also have not changed and still catch people out. On PS5 the game must sit on internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD; on Xbox it must sit on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. An external USB drive can archive a copy but cannot run it. If buying hardware is the answer, our storage upgrade guide covers what actually works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 212GB the download size or the installed size?

Rockstar gave one figure for the storage you need to have free before pre-load, described as up to 212GB. It did not break out a separate compressed download figure, and each storefront will show its own exact number from November 10.

Is the Xbox Series S version smaller?

No reduced build has been announced. Plan for the same figure on a drive with roughly 364GB usable.

Will a day one patch make it bigger?

Almost certainly, and Rockstar has not sized it. Leave headroom beyond 212GB rather than clearing exactly that much.

Can I install GTA 6 on an external hard drive?

You can store it on one, but not play from one. PS5 requires internal storage or an M.2 SSD; Xbox requires the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card.

The Bottom Line

212GB, officially, for both consoles, with the exact per store figure arriving when pre-load opens on November 10. The reported 210GB was close, the 228GB claim was invented, and the old 120GB to 180GB estimates were far too conservative. Clear more than 212GB, not exactly 212GB, because the launch patch has not been sized and the one thing worse than a slow download is a stalled one.
