Nobody outside Rockstar knows how GTA 6 begins. What we do have is a studio that has opened eight major games in twenty five years and has barely changed its method once. That is a real pattern, and patterns are the only honest basis for this kind of piece. Everything below is clearly separated: what Rockstar has confirmed, and what its own history suggests.

The Pattern, in Eight Games

GameOpening
GTA 3 (2001)Prison transport ambush, escape, no dialogue from the player character
Vice City (2002)A drug deal on the docks that goes wrong immediately
San Andreas (2004)CJ lands, gets a bicycle, is dumped in rival territory by corrupt cops
GTA 4 (2008)Niko arrives by ship, taken to Roman's cab depot
Red Dead Redemption (2010)A train, a ferry crossing, a stranger doing someone else's work
Max Payne 3 (2012)A party, in the wrong order, narrated backwards
GTA 5 (2013)A 2004 prologue heist in snow, hundreds of miles from the real map
RDR2 (2018)The Colter blizzard, hours of it, on rails and freezing

Four things recur in nearly all of them.

One: the opening is not the game. Rockstar almost never starts you in the world you will spend the next eighty hours in. GTA 5's prologue is in another state entirely, in another decade. RDR2's first chapter is a snowbound corridor that the game then abandons. The open world opens later, and deliberately.

Two: your agency is throttled. The first hour is the most linear hour. You are escorted, driven, briefed, walked. Rockstar buys narrative control at the exact moment the player would otherwise sprint into a field and ignore the plot for nine hours.

Three: mechanics are taught inside fiction, not in a menu. The bicycle in San Andreas, the horse in RDR2, the wounded man you have to carry through snow. The tutorial is a scene.

Four: it opens on a failure. The deal collapses, the heist goes wrong, the gang is already running. GTA has almost never opened on competence.

What Is Actually Confirmed About GTA 6's Structure

Separating the record from the pattern. Confirmed by Rockstar: a chaptered story structure, a story length of roughly 80 hours, dual protagonists with character switching, and a narrative inspired by Bonnie and Clyde. Confirmed backstory: Lucia Caminos was born and raised in Liberty City and relocated to the Leonida Keys after serving prison time, where she reconnected with Jason Duval, who is slightly older and already embedded in Vice City's criminal underworld.

Not confirmed, and worth saying plainly: Rockstar has never described the opening, the prologue, the first mission, the first playable character, or whether the two protagonists are playable from the start. Our chapter structure piece covers what the chaptered framing does and does not tell us.

Where the Pattern Points

Given that pattern against that confirmed setup, the most likely shape of the first hour, stated as speculation:

A Lucia prologue, probably involving the prison. It is the single most load bearing fact in her confirmed biography and the only confirmed event that happens before the story's present. Rockstar's habit of opening elsewhere and earlier fits a pre release or release day sequence almost suspiciously well, which is also why the prologue has been a spoiler target for leak accounts. Treat any specific claim about it as unverified.

A controlled first drive rather than a free one. Expect to be a passenger before you are a driver. The confirmed two character getaway framing, with one driving and one shooting, is an unusually good tutorial device, and Rockstar has used escorted journeys as its tutorial of choice since 2008.

Character switching withheld. In GTA 5 switching arrived hours in, after the prologue and after Franklin. A dual protagonist game inspired by Bonnie and Clyde has an obvious reason to make you earn the pair rather than hand them over at minute three.

Settings decisions that matter before you start. This is the practical one. Aiming mode in particular has historically changed the entire feel of GTA combat, and aiming modes are confirmed to exist in GTA 6 without ever being described. Accessibility options are confirmed too. Both are worth opening before the prologue rather than forty hours later.

No rush. The confirmed shape, an 80 hour chaptered story with no microtransactions and no daily anything, means the opening is not a gate you are racing through. Our pacing guide makes the broader case.

The Case Against the Pattern

Worth stating, because pattern matching is not prophecy. GTA 6 is the first mainline GTA built from the start around two protagonists whose relationship is the story, and the Bonnie and Clyde framing implies they are together early rather than converging late. That is a genuine argument for breaking the slow isolated prologue habit and opening on the pair already in motion. RDR2's opening was also the most criticised part of an acclaimed game, and studios do read their reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has Rockstar said anything about GTA 6's opening mission?

No. Nothing about the prologue, the first mission, or which protagonist you play first has been described in any trailer, the Extended Look, or any official material.

Will I be able to switch between Jason and Lucia from the beginning?

Unknown. Character switching is confirmed, its availability at the start is not. GTA 5 withheld its third character and the switching mechanic for several hours.

Is there a prologue in GTA 6?

Unconfirmed. A chaptered structure is confirmed, and every modern Rockstar game has opened with a sequence set apart from the main map, but Rockstar has not used the word prologue about GTA 6.

How long is the tutorial?

Unknown and unannounced. For scale, RDR2's opening chapter ran several hours before the world opened, and GTA 5's prologue ran roughly fifteen minutes.

The Bottom Line

Expect the first hour to be the least free hour: a scene somewhere other than Vice City, probably Lucia's, probably built around the one confirmed event in her past, teaching you to drive and shoot inside a story rather than a menu, and ending on something going wrong. That is what Rockstar has done eight times. It is a pattern, not a leak, and the studio has an unusually good reason to break it this once.
