GTA 6 pre-orders are now being tracked at roughly 6.45 million copies and an estimated $630 million in value, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, in figures reported by TechSpot on October 20, 2026. The same snapshot puts PlayStation 5 at about 74 percent of tracked pre-orders, or roughly 4.8 million copies, against roughly 1.66 million on Xbox Series X and S.
That is a genuinely large number and a genuinely limited one, and the gap between those two things is the whole story.
What the new figure says
Three data points came out of the October 20 snapshot:
- Roughly 6.45 million pre-orders tracked, with the game 30 days from its November 19, 2026 release.
- Roughly $630 million in estimated pre-order value, against confirmed pricing of $79.99 standard and $99.99 Ultimate.
- A 74 / 26 platform split favouring PS5.
Put against Sensor Tower's own earlier work, the trajectory is the interesting part. In mid August the same firm's tracker showed roughly 4.3 million pre-orders, and its video game insights lead floated a conditional scenario in which GTA 6 could gross around $2 billion from pre-orders if it reached roughly 25 million of them by launch. We covered that projection at the time in our breakdown of the $2 billion pre-order claim.
From 4.3 million in mid August to 6.45 million in late October is growth of about 50 percent across nine weeks. It is also, measured against that 25 million threshold, about 26 percent of the way there with a month to go.
The caveat that has to lead, not follow
Rockstar and Take-Two have published no pre-order figure, and have said they do not intend to. Strauss Zelnick's line on the August 7 earnings call was that the company is "allergic to victory laps." Every number in circulation, including this one, is an outside estimate.
Sensor Tower is a reputable firm and its methodology is not the problem. The problem is what a storefront tracker can see:
| What the estimate covers | What it misses |
|---|---|
| Digital storefront activity in tracked territories | Physical retail pre-orders entirely |
| PS5 and Xbox Series X/S | Every untracked region |
| A point-in-time snapshot | Cancellations and edition changes |
| Unit counts inferred from chart position and app data | Bundle deals, gift cards, regional pricing |
Physical is the biggest hole. GTA 6 has no Collector's Edition, and the Ultimate Edition is digital only, but a standard-edition disc remains a real product with real retail pre-order books that no app tracker reads. Our pre-order numbers fact check walks through why the viral figures that circulate on social media, including the long running "39 million" claim, have no sourcing at all.
So the honest framing is this: 6.45 million is a floor on digital pre-orders in tracked markets, not a total. It is almost certainly an undercount of the real book, and it is not a sales result.
Why the PlayStation split matters more than the headline
The 74 percent PS5 share is the most load-bearing number in the release, because it lines up with things that are independently observable rather than estimated.
Sony has had the visibly more aggressive campaign: the temporary Vice City themed PlayStation App icon during the pre-order window, the Rockstar "plays best on PS5" positioning, the limited edition DualSense that sold out and went to scalpers, and the launch trailer captured on a base PS5. Microsoft, meanwhile, raised US console prices in August, taking the Series X 1TB from $649.99 to $799.99 and the Series S from $399.99 to $499.99, and discontinued the 2TB Series X.
One of those is a tailwind into a pre-order window and the other is a headwind. A roughly three to one split is what that looks like in a tracker. Xbox has publicly disputed readings of the pre-order gap before, which is worth remembering before treating the ratio as settled.
How to read this against the real forecasts
The figures that actually bear on GTA 6's commercial outcome are not pre-order trackers at all. They are sell-side launch quarter estimates, which have clustered around 29 to 30 million units, and outlier forecasts such as Piper Sandler's that run higher. Pre-orders are a leading indicator of the first 48 hours. They are close to worthless as a predictor of a game that will sell for a decade.
There is also an accounting point that gets lost every single quarter: pre-order cash is deferred revenue, not recognised revenue, until the game is delivered on or after November 19. Take-Two's Q2 FY27 results land November 9, 2026, ten days before launch, and the pre-order book will still be sitting in deferred revenue on that balance sheet. Anyone reading a quarterly loss as a demand signal is reading the wrong line.
Frequently Asked Questions
Has Rockstar confirmed 6.45 million pre-orders?
No. The figure comes from Sensor Tower, a third party market intelligence firm, and was reported on October 20, 2026. Rockstar and Take-Two have released no official pre-order numbers and have indicated they do not plan to.
Does the 6.45 million figure include physical copies?
No. Sensor Tower tracks digital storefront activity. Physical retail pre-orders are not captured, which means the real pre-order book is larger than the tracked figure by an unknown margin.
Is GTA 6 still on track for November 19?
Yes. November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S remains the only release date Rockstar has given since the delay from May 26, 2026. Preload is set for November 12. No PC version has been announced in any form.
Why is PS5 so far ahead of Xbox?
The tracked split is roughly 74 percent PS5. The plausible drivers are a more aggressive Sony marketing partnership and an August Xbox console price increase in the US, but no one has published a causal breakdown, so treat the explanation as inference rather than fact.
The Bottom Line
6.45 million tracked digital pre-orders and an estimated $630 million are the largest credible outside figures yet published for GTA 6, and they are up roughly 50 percent in nine weeks. They are also an incomplete slice of one channel, produced by a firm that cannot see retail, cancellations or untracked regions.
Use the number as evidence that demand is enormous and accelerating into launch. Do not use it as a sales total, a record claim, or a forecast. The first number that will actually mean something is the one Take-Two reports after November 19, and even that will arrive with a quarter's worth of accounting between it and the truth.
