Most of what we know about GTA 6's map concerns scale. It is roughly 2.4 to 2.7 times GTA 5's by total area, split across six major regions, four of which are not Vice City. Scale is the easy headline. The harder and more interesting question is what that space does to the act of moving through it, and the Grassrivers is where that question gets sharpest.
The launch trailer put the issue on screen without comment. In one sequence, Jason and two armed men are trekking the Grassrivers on foot, at night, in night vision goggles. No vehicle. No boat. Walking.
What the Grassrivers actually is
Rockstar has confirmed Grassrivers as one of six major regions, and coverage of the Extended Look described it as Leonida's version of the Everglades, a sprawling wetland filled with wildlife. That description is a summary of the feature rather than a developer quote, so hold it loosely, but the regional name and its existence are confirmed.
What makes a real Everglades distinctive is not that it is water. It is that it is water you cannot use a boat on. The Everglades is a shallow sheet moving slowly through sawgrass, frequently measured in inches. A submerged propeller grounds immediately. That is why airboats exist: a flat bottom hull with a caged aircraft propeller mounted above deck, steered by rudders in the prop wash.
The design consequence is significant. A wetland is not a lake with trees. It is terrain that defeats both of the series' standard movement solutions at once. Cars cannot go there. Boats cannot go there either.
Three ways across, and what is confirmed about each
On foot. This is the only one the trailer actually shows. Rockstar has confirmed on foot traversal and climbing as a design area, and the Grassrivers sequence is footage of exactly that. What has not been described is whether wading, mud, water depth or vegetation affect movement speed, stamina, noise or visibility. The scene is evidence that walking through the swamp is possible and story relevant. It is not evidence of a traversal system.
Airboats and fan boats. These are on the confirmed side activity list, which is the strongest single fact in this whole discussion. Rockstar listed fan boats and airboats among shown or stated activities. That is a genuine confirmation that shallow water transport exists in some form. What remains unconfirmed is everything else: how they handle, where they can go, whether they are purchasable, whether they are a vehicle class or a single activity. Our airboats explainer covers the real world basis and the franchise precedent.
Air. The launch trailer contained at least four helicopter sequences, and the map has confirmed airports and airstrips. Flying over a wetland solves it entirely, which is precisely the tension: a map built around unmarked exploration rewards with no blips is in direct conflict with letting the player skip the ground.
The RDR2 warning
Here is the honest counterargument, and it is a strong one.
Red Dead Redemption 2's Bluewater Marsh is the closest thing Rockstar has previously built to Grassrivers, and it received no dedicated vehicle at all. You crossed it on horseback, slowly, in the dark, and that was the experience. Rockstar has built a swamp before and resisted the urge to engineer a solution for it.
San Andreas is the other data point, and it points the other way: that game shipped the Vortex hovercraft, the closest amphibious analogue the series has had, specifically in the Bayside and Verdant Meadows area.
So the precedent is genuinely split, and the confirmed airboat line is what tips it. Rockstar appears to be taking the San Andreas route this time, which would be a notable change in how the series treats difficult terrain.
Why this matters more than it sounds
Traversal friction is a content multiplier. This is the part worth sitting with.
If the Grassrivers is crossable at speed, it becomes a region you pass through. If it is slow, loud, dark and awkward, it becomes a region you are in, and everything placed there gains weight: the wildlife, the unmarked discoveries, the distance between safety and trouble. The confirmed 170 plus animal species and the no blips philosophy both suggest Rockstar wants the second outcome.
The trailer sequence supports that reading. Three armed men walking through a swamp at night with goggles on is a scene that only exists because the swamp is hard. Make it easy and you lose the shot.
What Rockstar has not said
- Whether water depth, mud or vegetation affect movement in any way.
- Whether night vision is an item, equipment type or mechanic at all. The goggles are footage. Nothing more.
- Any detail of how airboats handle or where they can go.
- Any official map of Leonida, including where the Grassrivers sits relative to anything else.
- Whether the wetland has a hard boundary, a soft one, or opens into Mount Kalaga or Ambrosia.
- Whether storm damage or flooding is persistent world state, which on a wetland would be the single most interesting possible answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you walk through the swamp in GTA 6?
The launch trailer shows Jason and two others doing exactly that at night, so it is possible and story relevant. Rockstar has not described any movement penalty, stamina cost or visibility effect attached to it.
Are airboats confirmed for GTA 6?
Yes. Fan boats and airboats appear on the confirmed side activity list from the Extended Look round. Their handling, availability and range are all unconfirmed.
How big is the Grassrivers region?
Unknown. Rockstar has confirmed six regions and a total map area of roughly 2.4 to 2.7 times GTA 5, with no breakdown by region and no official map.
Is the night vision in the trailer a gameplay item?
Not confirmed. It appears in trailer footage only. Rockstar has announced no equipment, item or vision mechanic.
The Bottom Line
The Grassrivers is the one region whose value depends almost entirely on how hard it is to cross, and Rockstar has given us exactly two data points: airboats exist, and the story sends people in on foot at night. Both of those point the same direction, toward a wetland that is meant to slow you down rather than a region you fly over. Everything past that, including whether mud and water depth do anything at all, is still unannounced, and on a map this size the difference between a swamp you traverse and a swamp you cross is the difference between a region and a backdrop.
