Most of what we know about GTA 6 character switching describes two people in two places: swap from Jason to Lucia and the camera leaves one life for another. Edge's studio report added a smaller detail that is more interesting than it sounds. During a two character getaway, with both protagonists in the same vehicle, you can switch between driver and passenger, and the character you left is handled by conventional game AI.

That is a different mechanic wearing the same name, and it is worth separating out. This piece is about the one car, two people case specifically. The broader system, where switching moves you across the map between separate storylines, is covered in the character switching piece, and what your partner does during objectives is in the partner objective system piece. Those two own the general questions. This one owns the seat.

Why the seat is a decision and not a camera angle

In GTA 5, switching protagonists during a mission was mostly a framing tool. Michael and Franklin were in different positions doing different jobs, and switching moved your attention from one job to the other. You were not giving anything up, because the job you left was usually waiting rather than ongoing.

A getaway is not like that. Both roles are live, simultaneous, and mutually exclusive:

So switching seats is a genuine trade, in real time, with a cost. You are not choosing where to look. You are choosing which half of the problem you want to solve yourself, and handing the other half to the AI.

The AI is the part nobody has quantified

Rockstar's description, as reported, is that the other character is handled by "traditional game AI." That phrasing is doing a lot of work and it is the single biggest open question in the mechanic.

If AI driving is competent, the choice is genuinely free and you will pick by taste: take the wheel if you trust your own driving, take the gun if you do not. If AI driving is merely adequate, then shooting is a luxury you can rarely afford, and the mechanic collapses into "drive, except for a scripted moment where you are told to shoot." The series has a long history of partner AI that is fine on a straight road and a liability at speed.

And the roads here reportedly work against it. Rockstar has described deliberately narrower streets and highways than GTA 5's, which we covered in the narrower roads piece, alongside a handling model reported to carry GTA 4 style weight, discussed in the driving model piece. Narrow roads and heavy cars are exactly the conditions under which an AI driver either shines or embarrasses itself. Nothing has been confirmed about AI driving quality, and that is the detail to watch at launch.

It interlocks with the rest of the pursuit systems

The seat swap stops looking like a novelty once you put it next to what else Rockstar has described about escapes.

Splitting up divides the response. Police tracking accomplices means two people together are a different description from two people apart, as we laid out in the wanted system rebuild. A shared car is the state in which you are most identifiable, so there is pressure to separate, which the seat swap does not help with.

Spike strips end vehicle escapes. In the demo Edge describes, a police spike strip burst a motorcycle's front tyre and threw both protagonists off, after which the chase continued on foot and ended with a K-9 unit catching Jason. See the spike strip piece and the police dog piece. Two people in one vehicle is two people who share a single point of failure.

The trunk is in that car. Confirmed weapon carry limits mean the arsenal lives in trunk storage, and the newly named Scooter Bros app, covered in the vehicle delivery piece, reportedly brings your personal vehicle with the trunk weapons aboard. So the getaway car is simultaneously your escape, your identifier and your armoury. Abandoning it solves one problem and creates two.

What is genuinely unknown

Being precise about the gaps, because coverage of this detail has been thin:

None of these have been stated. The cooldown and motorcycle questions in particular decide whether this is a tactical tool or a scripted flourish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you switch characters any time in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published the rules. Switching between driver and passenger during a two character getaway has been described, and the broader protagonist switching system exists, but no conditions, cooldowns or restrictions have been confirmed.

Can Jason and Lucia both be in the same car outside missions?

This has not been confirmed for free roam. The described case comes from a mission style getaway in a studio demo. Whether the pair travel together during open play is unknown.

Does the AI drive well?

Unknown, and it is the most important unanswered question about the mechanic. Rockstar's reported description is only that the other character is handled by traditional game AI, with no detail on competence, route choice or behaviour under pursuit.

Is this different from GTA 5's character switching?

Functionally yes. GTA 5 switching generally moved you between characters in different places. This is two characters in one vehicle trading two live, exclusive roles, which makes it a tactical choice rather than a change of viewpoint.

The Bottom Line

A seat swap sounds like a small thing next to a map the size of Leonida, but it is the moment GTA 6's dual protagonist design stops being a storytelling device and becomes a control problem. You cannot drive and shoot. Someone has to do each, one of them is a computer, and three weeks out nobody outside Rockstar knows how good that computer is at driving a heavy car down a deliberately narrow street with a spike strip somewhere ahead.
