One of the most practical questions surrounding GTA 6 is also one of the least glamorous: how much storage space does it need? The official file size has not been confirmed by Rockstar, but by looking at the game's technical scope and Rockstar's own back catalogue, we can make a very informed estimate — and start planning your storage now.
The Official Answer: Not Yet Confirmed
As of June 24, 2026, Rockstar has not announced GTA 6's file size for PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. File sizes are typically confirmed in the days or weeks before a game's launch, often appearing in storefront listings once pre-load becomes available.
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. Pre-orders open June 25, 2026. Expect the official file size to appear on storefront listings — PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store — closer to the pre-load window, likely in October or November.
What We Can Learn from Rockstar's Previous Games
Rockstar's games get bigger with every generation. Here is the relevant comparison data:
| Game | Platform | File Size |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 (original) | PS3 / Xbox 360 | ~18GB |
| GTA 5 (PS4 / Xbox One) | Last-gen | ~76GB |
| GTA 5 (PS5 / Xbox Series) | Current-gen | ~94GB |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | PS4 / Xbox One | ~105GB |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS5) | Current-gen | ~150GB |
Red Dead Redemption 2 was Rockstar's most recent major release before GTA 6, and it landed at 150GB on current-gen hardware. GTA 6 is a larger, more complex, and more graphically demanding game than RDR2. That 150GB figure is a useful lower bound — GTA 6 is unlikely to be smaller than RDR2.
Why GTA 6 Will Be Significantly Larger
The confirmed details about GTA 6's scope explain why the file size will be substantial:
Map Size
The State of Leonida is estimated to be 2.4–2.7x the size of GTA 5's map. More land, more roads, more water, more buildings — all of that geometry, texture, and detail has to live somewhere.
700+ Enterable Interiors
GTA 5 had a relatively small number of enterable buildings. GTA 6 has 700+ enterable interiors, each fully detailed and interactive. That is an enormous quantity of unique interior assets — furniture, props, textures, lighting rigs — all requiring storage.
Advanced Graphics
GTA 6 features ray-traced global illumination and reflections, strand-based hair simulation, and dynamic clothing physics. Ray-traced assets, high-resolution texture packs, and physically accurate material data are all significantly larger than the equivalent assets in last-generation titles.
200+ Vehicles
With over 200 confirmed vehicles, each requiring high-resolution textures, damage models, interior cockpit assets, and audio files, the vehicle pool alone represents a meaningful chunk of the install.
Dual Protagonists
Both Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval have fully realised character models with growing facial hair and dynamic clothing. Unique character assets across two leads compound the storage demand.
Our Estimate: 120–180GB (Possibly More)
Combining the Rockstar back-catalogue data with GTA 6's confirmed technical scope, 120–180GB is the most plausible range for the base install on PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Series S version may be slightly smaller due to lower-resolution texture packs optimised for its 1440p target.
Some analysts and community members have speculated as high as 200GB+ if Rockstar delivers full ray-traced 4K texture packs for PS5 and Series X. That figure should be treated as speculation — but it is not implausible given the game's ambition.
Day-One Patch: Add More on Top
Almost certainly, GTA 6 will ship with a day-one patch — an update downloaded on launch day that includes final fixes, additional content, and possibly GTA 6 Online infrastructure. Day-one patches for AAA games routinely range from 5–30GB. Add that to your estimate.
So: plan for a minimum of 120GB of free space, and ideally 150GB+ to be safe.
How to Prepare Your Storage Now
Do not wait until October to deal with this. Start now.
PS5 Storage Tips
- The PS5 ships with an internal NVMe SSD, but only around 667GB is usable after the system takes its share
- GTA 6 will need to be on the internal drive (or a compatible M.2 expansion SSD) to run at full performance — extended USB storage works for other PS4 games but not for full PS5 performance
- Recommended: Install a 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD in the PS5's expansion slot. Sony officially supports this and it is a straightforward upgrade. Brands like Samsung 980 Pro, Seagate FireCuda, and WD Black SN850X are compatible
- Go to Settings > Storage on your PS5 to see your current usage and start clearing space now
Xbox Series X and Series S Tips
- The Xbox Series X has 802GB of usable internal storage; the Series S has just 364GB
- For Xbox, Seagate's Storage Expansion Card (officially licensed) is the fastest way to add compatible high-speed storage — games run directly from it at full speed
- Standard external USB drives work for storage and transfers but cannot run Xbox Series X/S games at native performance
- Go to Settings > System > Storage to audit your current usage

When Will the Official Size Be Confirmed?
Watch the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings once pre-orders go live on June 25, 2026. Store listings often include file size data from the moment they appear, even if Rockstar has not made an official announcement. We will update this article the moment an official figure is confirmed.
Bottom Line
GTA 6's download size is not official yet, but all evidence points to 120–180GB as the realistic range — possibly more. GTA 5 was 94GB and GTA 6 is a generational leap above it in every dimension. Start freeing up storage space now, budget for an SSD upgrade if you are running low, and expect a day-one patch on top of whatever the base install weighs in at. The November 19 launch will be here faster than you think.
