The sticker price is the easy part. GTA 6 costs $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for Ultimate, both locked in since pre-orders opened on June 25 and neither one moving before launch. What catches people out is everything stacked around it: a controller, an album, storage you did not budget for, and in some cases a console.
With 59 days to November 19, here is the honest arithmetic. Confirmed numbers are marked as such. The four line items Rockstar and Sony have not published are marked too, because a budget guide that invents figures is worse than no budget guide.

That is the entire published list. Everything else below is either your own existing kit or a number nobody has released.
The Game: Standard or Ultimate
The $20 gap buys the Ultimate Edition's exclusive vehicles, apparel and personalised weapons. It does not buy story content, early access or a season pass, and our editions breakdown goes through exactly what is in each. Worth knowing before you decide: third-party tracking suggested an unusually high share of buyers picked Ultimate, covered in our piece on that split. Herd behaviour is not a reason to spend $20.
The price will not drop. Retail savings on this title arrive sideways, through gift card arbitrage, loyalty multipliers and student pricing, never as a discount. Storage: The Number Nobody Has
Unpublished. Rockstar has not announced GTA 6's install size, and anything you have seen quoted is an estimate. Our download size piece explains why the guesses vary so widely.
What that means practically: you cannot budget this precisely yet, but you can prepare. A PS5 has around 667GB usable out of its 825GB, and a Series X around 802GB out of 1TB. If you are already close to full, the decision point is an internal NVMe drive, which for a 2TB model in the compatible performance range has generally sat in the $120 to $180 band through 2026, though prices have been volatile given the component cost pressure that pushed Xbox hardware prices up in August. The cheaper move, and the one most people should make first, is deleting things. You have 59 days to work out which 200GB of installed games you have not opened since spring.
The Controller Question
The limited edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers are $85 each, in black or white, launching November 19 alongside the game, sold through PlayStation Direct and unnamed participating retailers. This is an optional cosmetic purchase and should be treated as one. The functional argument for a second controller is different and better: an 80-hour campaign will outlast a battery, and a spare pad means you are not playing tethered at hour six. A standard DualSense does that job for less.
There is no Xbox equivalent and no console bundle. Neither has been announced.
The Album
Entirely optional, and priced like a record rather than like game merchandise. The CD is $19.98, the standard double vinyl $49.98, and the Limited Edition vinyl was $124.98 before it reportedly sold out within hours with no restock announced. Streaming is free on November 19. One scheduling note that matters if you are buying physical: the official store and most coverage list shipping from November 20, one day after the game. You are not getting a vinyl to play on launch night.
The Console Line, If You Need One
The expensive scenario. GTA 6 runs on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S only, with no PC version announced. Xbox's US prices rose on August 1: Series X 1TB to $799.99, Series S 512GB to $499.99, with the 2TB Series X discontinued. Sony's pricing has moved separately through the generation.

Three Realistic Totals
Assuming you already own a console and have storage sorted:
- Minimum viable: $79.99. The game. Nothing else is required.
- The common build: $99.99 Ultimate plus a spare standard controller, landing somewhere near $175.
- The full collector run: $99.99 Ultimate, $85 limited DualSense, $49.98 vinyl, plus a 2TB drive. Comfortably past $350, and the vinyl arrives after launch.
Add a console and none of those numbers are the number any more.

Will GTA 6 go on sale before launch?
No. The price has been fixed since June 25 and Rockstar does not discount pre-launch. Savings come through gift cards, loyalty schemes and student pricing.
How much storage do I need for GTA 6?
Not announced. Rockstar has published no install size. Clearing space now is the only reliable preparation.
Is the Ultimate Edition worth $20 more?
It adds vehicles, apparel and personalised weapons, not story content. If cosmetic extras are not a priority, Standard is the complete game.

The floor is $79.99 and everything above it is elective. The two line items worth genuinely planning for are storage, which nobody can size for you yet because Rockstar has not published the number, and a spare controller, which an 80-hour campaign will justify faster than a limited edition finish will. Ignore the countdown-driven urge to buy the full set in October. The only thing with a real deadline is clearing space on your drive, and that one is free.
