Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 storage requirements run up to 212GB, and pre-load opens on November 10. If your console is like most consoles, that figure is not currently sitting free. The good news is that you almost certainly do not need to buy anything. This is a triage guide: what to clear, in what order, and what to leave alone.

Work through it before Tuesday. Deleting a 90GB game while a 212GB download is already queued is the slowest possible way to do this.

Step One: Find Out What You Actually Have

On PS5, go to Settings, then Storage, then Games and Apps. Press the Options button and sort by size. On Xbox Series X|S, go to Settings, System, Storage devices, then Manage storage on your internal drive, and sort by size there.

Both consoles will surprise you. The pattern is almost always the same: two or three enormous live service games you have not launched in months accounting for more than half the used space, and forty small games accounting for very little.

Step Two: The Easy Wins, in Order

1. Live service shooters. This is where the space is. A single modern Call of Duty install with its campaign and multiplayer packs can run 150GB to 230GB on its own. Deleting one is frequently the entire job. Nothing is lost: progression lives on the publisher's servers, not your drive.

2. Games you finished. A completed single player game is pure archive. Your save stays in cloud storage with PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core, and the install is a 50GB to 150GB bookmark for a game you are not going to replay before launch week.

3. Game Pass and PS Plus catalogue titles. These are the cheapest things on your drive to delete because re-downloading them costs nothing and requires no decision. If it came from a subscription, it goes first.

4. Optional packs inside games you keep. This is the step most people miss. Several large games let you uninstall parts of themselves: campaign, multiplayer, high resolution texture packs, individual language audio. On PS5, highlight the game, press Options, then Manage game content. On Xbox, open the game's Manage installation menu. Removing a multiplayer component you never touch can free 40GB without losing the game you actually play.

5. Captures. Screenshots and especially video clips accumulate silently. On PS5 this is Settings, Storage, Media Gallery; on Xbox it is Settings, System, Storage devices, then Captures. Four hours of 4K clips is real space, and almost nobody has ever rewatched them.

Step Three: What to Move Instead of Delete

If you own an external USB drive, use it as a holding pen rather than a graveyard. Both consoles let you move current generation games to USB storage, where they cannot be played but can be moved back without re-downloading.

That is the key distinction, and it trips a lot of people up. GTA 6 itself cannot run from a USB drive. On PS5 it must live on internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD; on Xbox Series X|S it must live on the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card. But everything you are evicting to make room for it can sit on a cheap USB drive quite happily. If you do want to add permanent space, our storage upgrade guide covers the hardware that actually works.

Step Four: Leave Headroom, Not Exactly 212GB

Clear more than the number. Three reasons:

Aim for 240GB free if you can manage it. If you cannot, 220GB is a sensible floor.

The Xbox Series S Problem

Series S owners have the hardest version of this task: roughly 364GB usable out of the box, against a 212GB game. That is not a tidy-up, it is a clear-out. Realistically a Series S running GTA 6 holds GTA 6, one other substantial game, and a handful of small ones. If you are in that position, a Storage Expansion Card is the only way to keep a broader library, and it is worth deciding that this week rather than on launch night.

Step Five: Patch the Console First

Do this before the download, not during it. System software updates that land mid-download are the most common cause of a stalled queue, and PS5 has shipped three security patches in five weeks. Update the console, restart it, then let the pre-load run. Full timings for pre-load day are here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose my save files if I delete a game?

Not if cloud saves are enabled, which they are by default with PlayStation Plus and on Xbox. Check the game's save status before deleting anything you care about, and for anything without cloud support, copy the save to USB first.

Can I pre-load GTA 6 to an external drive and move it later?

No. Pre-load installs to a location the game can run from, which means internal storage or an M.2 SSD on PS5, and the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card on Xbox.

How long will a 212GB download take?

On a 100Mbps connection, roughly five hours at full speed. On 500Mbps, about an hour. Launch week congestion on both storefronts will slow this down, which is the entire argument for starting on November 10 rather than November 18.

Is deleting GTA Online worth it to make room?

It is one of the larger installs on most drives and GTA 6 does not require it. If you are still playing, note that your progression is server side, so reinstalling later costs download time and nothing else.

The Bottom Line

Sort by size, delete the live service shooter you stopped playing, strip optional packs out of games you keep, offload the rest to USB, and target 240GB free rather than 212GB. Then patch the console and leave it alone. Ten minutes of housekeeping this week buys you a download that finishes nine days before anyone needs it to.
