Twenty seven days to launch, twenty to preload, and the GTA 6 news week that just passed produced one genuine new Rockstar artefact, two third party numbers worth handling carefully, and a predicted date that produced nothing at all. Here is the week of October 17 to 23, sorted by how much it actually matters.
Confirmed calendar, unchanged and still only two Rockstar dates: preload November 12, launch November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Take-Two's Q2 FY27 earnings call on November 9 is the one confirmed non Rockstar date.
1. The first GTA 6 TV commercial aired, and it is a different cut
The week's only new Rockstar material. A GTA 6 advertisement ran during an NBC basketball broadcast of the 76ers against the Knicks, reported by RockstarINTEL on October 21 and GameSpot on October 22 from viewer recordings. It is an alternate edit of the October 15 launch trailer rather than the trailer itself.
What changed: the shower sequence with Jason and Lucia is cut from the 30 second spot, the close up of Lucia's ankle monitor is gone, several character beats run longer (Jason nudging Lucia, Raul Batista dancing, the knife grab after a chokehold), and the Xbox logo is absent from the end card, which GameSpot attributes to Rockstar's reported promotional arrangement with Sony. Longer cuts of around 60 and 90 seconds are also in circulation.
No new footage, and no Rockstar statement of any kind. Full detail in our TV commercial breakdown. The signal worth taking is the media buy: national sports inventory is the broad reach phase of a campaign, aimed at people who have never watched a game trailer.
2. Sensor Tower's tracker moved to 6.45 million
Reported by TechSpot on October 20: Sensor Tower put tracked GTA 6 pre-orders at roughly 6.45 million copies and an estimated $630 million in value, split about 74 percent PS5 to 26 percent Xbox. That is roughly 50 percent growth on the same tracker's mid August figure of about 4.3 million.
The caveats have to lead, not follow. Sensor Tower sees digital storefronts in tracked territories only: no physical retail, no untracked regions, no cancellations. So 6.45 million is a floor on tracked digital, not a total, and certainly not a sales result. Rockstar and Take-Two have still published no official pre-order figure and have said none is coming, Strauss Zelnick's line from August being that the company is "allergic to victory laps." Our full breakdown of the tracker handles the methodology.
3. The $1 billion sick day claim, and why the arithmetic does not reproduce
Carried widely from October 21: a claim that GTA 6's launch could cost the United States economy close to $1 billion in a single day because up to 1.5 million workers may call out sick around November 19, attributed to economics professor Jose Garcia Montalvo via an International Business Times report.
Two inputs were published: 1.5 million absentees and roughly $70,000 average annual output per worker. Run it yourself and $70,000 across about 250 working days is roughly $280 per worker-day, times 1.5 million is about $420 million, not a billion. Reaching $1 billion requires assumptions nobody published. GTA BOOM, which carried the story, called the 1.5 million figure a ceiling rather than a likely outcome. Also worth noting: November 19 is a Thursday, and preload on November 12 removes the install day friction that historically motivated taking a day off. Our full treatment applies the three question test to it.
4. October 22 came and went
Game Rant and OpenCritic both flagged October 22 as the next date to watch, on the reasoning that the launch trailer landed on Thursday October 15 and recent beats clustered on Thursdays. Rockstar announced nothing, which is what our piece on that prediction argued at the time: a fortnightly reading of the identical pattern points at October 29 instead, and a pattern that resolves to two different answers is being read too finely.
Then the TV spot turned up on the 21st, from a media buy rather than a Newswire post. Rockstar has now broken its own cadence three times in 2026: the Extended Look through Netflix, the launch trailer unannounced, and now an advertising campaign nobody scheduled for us.
5. Still carrying over from earlier in the month
- Review copies: insider NateTheHate said on ResetEra that press copies should arrive before the end of October. Insider Gaming reported an embargo will lift before launch and said it withheld a preliminary date; Notebookcheck noted that report was subsequently deleted. Still a report, not a confirmation.
- The Game Awards: GTA 6 clears the eligibility cutoff of November 20 by roughly 27 hours. Eligibility is not a nomination.
- Take-Two's November 9 call reports the quarter ended September 30, so it contains no GTA 6 sales. See our earnings preview.
What is still unannounced, 27 days out
Going gold remains the most overdue item on the board. Also unannounced: any review embargo date, the final install size with preload 20 days away, any official ESRB or PEGI rating, the total radio station count or any station or DJ, how the dynamic score behaves in play, any official tracklist beyond the nine named album songs, PC in any form, GTA Online for GTA 6 in any form, any official map of Leonida, and any tribunal ruling (the Glasgow hearing runs to November 18).

Frequently Asked Questions
Was there new GTA 6 footage this week?
No. The TV commercial is an alternate edit of the October 15 launch trailer. Every shot in it had already been published.
Has Rockstar confirmed how many pre-orders GTA 6 has?
No. Rockstar and Take-Two have released no official pre-order figure and have said they do not intend to. The 6.45 million figure is Sensor Tower's estimate of tracked digital storefronts only.
Is GTA 6 still releasing on November 19?
Yes. November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, reaffirmed repeatedly through the year, with preload opening November 12.
Has GTA 6 gone gold?
Rockstar has not announced it. With under a month to launch this is the most conspicuous gap in the campaign, though a gold announcement has never been obligatory.
The Bottom Line
One real new thing this week, and it arrived through a television advertising break rather than a Newswire post: a recut launch trailer with the shower scenes and the ankle monitor removed and no Xbox logo on the end card. Everything else was third party numbers that need their caveats stated first and a predicted date that produced nothing. With 27 days left, Rockstar's confirmed calendar is still two dates long, and going gold is still unannounced.
